Exhibition opening "Expropriation: on the history of a contested concept"
On March 11, 2023, the exhibition "Expropriation: On the History of a Contested Concept" opened at the Museum of Capitalism. Leonard Haas from the initiative "Deutsche Wohnen & Co Expropriate" and philosopher Rahel Jaeggi will speak at the opening at 4 pm.
Ever since the initiative "Deutsche Wohnen & Co Enteignen" mobilized in Berlin for a referendum on the socialization of large housing companies, "expropriation" has been on everyone's lips. The term is polarizing. And the topic of "expropriation" is also one of the major topics of contention in the current coalition negotiations.

The three historians Lisa Schank, Niels Hölmer and Theresa Kühnert took this controversial term as the starting point for their exhibition project. Together with the designer Laura Fischinger, the designer Lion Sauterleute and the visual artist Vanessa A. Opoku, they developed the exhibition "Expropriation: On the History of a Contested Concept" last year. The project is funded by the Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Europe.

The exhibition looks at the topic along the lines of the questions: When were demands for expropriation voiced in Berlin and elsewhere? How were they implemented? Who was expropriated, who wanted to expropriate, and who protested against or for it? It outlines moments of expropriation in Berlin and beyond and aims to offer a contribution to current debates. Expropriation debates from Marx to today are included.

With contributions by: Sabine Nuss (political scientist and journalist), Gisela Notz (social scientist), Mnyaka Sururu Mboro (activist Berlin Postcolonial), Janou (activist* "RWE & Co Expropriate"), Bernhard Hummel (Mietshäuser Syndikat Berlin-Brandenburg) and many more.
